New legislator meets with constituents

Summit resident and SNA member Ralph Mero, left, has a one-on-one discussion with Rep. Aaron Regunberg Monday evening at Rochambeau Library.
Several Summit residents seized the opportunity Monday evening to talk one on one with Rep. Aaron Regunberg at the Rochambeau Library.
The newly elected Democrat represents District 4 in the General Assembly and has instituted a “Hold Your Rep Accountable” program in which he will be available for constituents to drop in and share ideas or questions with him.
By 6 p.m. Monday, halfway through the two-hour time allotted, about 10 local people, some of them members of the Summit Neighborhood Association, had sat down with Regunberg to discuss topics as diverse as solar power and dying with dignity. Each person had as much time as needed as the others waited, munching on donuts the legislator provided.
The intimate session was in contrast to a larger community discussion Regunberg held in November and he promised to have another such event in the coming months. His notification of Monday’s meeting said he thinks “it’s valuable to have this regular accessibility,” but in the meantime, “feel free to reach out to me anytime by email or phone.”

Annual meeting to be at Highlands
Highlands on the East Side, an assisted-living and memory-care center at 101 Highland Ave., has agreed to again be the site of the SNA annual meeting, this year on May 20.
In the past, the event had been in January or February, but the board of directors decided to move the date out of the cold and snowy New England winter to make the meeting more easily accessible.
As it did last year, the annual meeting this year will combine the election of a new board of directors with a social gathering. It will be an opportunity to get up close and personal with elected officials as well as other people of influence in the neighborhood and city, a “who you need to know” party. Participants can expect to sample wines, foods and other offerings of local merchants as well as voice opinions as to the proper direction of the association. It is also a good time to join or renew a membership.
The Highlands is also sponsoring a shoes and socks drive to assist shelters and agencies for the homeless.
Village Concept for seniors presented
Living well as you age was the theme of a presentation to the SNA board by advocates of a “village concept” in which seniors work together to facilitate services while being able to stay in their own homes.
Introduced by SNA member Ralph Mero, organizer Cy O’Neill described the system which was first put in place in Boston’s Beacon Hill and which has since spread across the country. He said the villages are “comprised of member-volunteers and a small professional staff . . . who provide one-call-does-it-all access to the services members need to live safely and confidently in their own homes while staying connected to a supportive community.”
O’Neill said the Providence organizers have an online survey of needs at www.ProvidenceVillageRI.org and he urged people to take a look. He also noted their email address of ProvidenceVillageRi@gmail.com and a telephone number, 401-441-5240, for further information.
The SNA board agreed to serve as a conduit for interested neighbors and board member Jim Barfoot volunteered to assist.
