“Providence Water has scheduled a public information meeting for the Blackstone neighborhood on Tuesday, March 26th at 6:30pm at the Nathan Bishop Middle School located at 101 Sessions Street in Providence. At the meeting, Providence Water will present this year’s water main improvement plans for the Blackstone neighborhood.”
Since the reality is the perceived boundaries of the Blackstone and Summit (“Hope Village” in Nextdoor land) neighborhoods is different than what’s on the official city maps and presumably what ProvWater references, we have asked if they can share the street list for water main upgrades so we know which parts of our neighborhoods this affects, which may help folks decide whether they want to attend. We’ll share that information when we find out.
The Elorza administration is hosting a series of public meetings on the idea of selling the water supply to a regional entity. The mayor has stated that selling to a private company is not currently on the table, but selling to a quasi-public entity like the Narragansett Bay Commission is. City representatives and elected officials announced the introduction of State enabling legislation that will allow the City of Providence to partner with municipal water supply systems or regional water quality management district commissions
in an effort to ensure long term rate and quality stability of the city and state’s greatest asset, the Providence water supply.
Providence Water is the leading water supplier in Rhode Island, serving 60% of state residents. There is consensus among leaders that the City of Providence cannot continue to provide and pay for the water
supply that serves over 600,000
customers. Should proactive steps not be taken to stabilize the City’s
long-term finances, the system would likely be among the first assets at
risk with insolvency. The proposed legislation would enable the City to
continue to put itself on solid financial
ground by protecting this asset and using the expertise of partners to
position Providence Water on a more sustainable path, ensuring reliability and high quality service.
The City is inviting residents from across Rhode
Island to participate in community conversations hosted by the Mayor’s
Office and partners focused on the legislation and its potential impact

With the ongoing federal government shutdown, volunteers from the Camp Street Ministries food pantry have shared worry that many of the folks who use their services and SNAP (federal nutrition assistance/food stamps) may be facing added challenges. While SNAP benefits for February are due to post on January 20th, they anticipate that folks may not be able to stretch their dollars as they might need, and that there may be no benefit at all the following month. This would in turn stretch Camp Street’s services as more folks seek them out, and their supplies are currently very low, so they’re asking the community for donations.
Their suggested items include:
-Canned tuna
-Canned vegetables – especially corn which they say is always a big hit
-Canned stews
-Pasta sauce – at the moment they have quite a bit of pasta that has been donated. But no sauce to pair with it.
-Pancake mix – the kind that only needs water added.
-Peanut butter
-Canned fruit – not applesauce
-Cereals
You may bring these items personally, during their open hours (Tuesday-Fridays 10am-3pm and Saturday 10-1pm). They’re located at 190 Camp Street. Alternatively, you can find a collection box at the circulation desk in the Rochambeau Library.

The Summit Neighborhood Association’s next monthly board meeting, open to all, will be on January 28th, 2019 instead of the usual third Monday, which is January 21st, Martin Luther King, Jr. day.
Our 8th Annual Cook-off will be this coming Thursday, November 1st, at 6pm at Seven Stars Bakery on Hope Street! Bring your best dish featuring SQUASH and win prizes! Kids are encouraged to wear costumes and squeeze one last day of excitement out of the season!

You can also pick up a map, and do more bargain hunting, at our central hub at the Citizens Bank parking lot on Hope Street. See you around the neighborhood on Sunday!
The SNA Annual Yard Sale will be Sunday, September 23rd from 10am to 2pm. Sign up today to get your yard on our map! Participants set up their own yard sales with the benefit of our centralized map and publicity driving up customers. Customers who are looking for bargains can grab a map in person at our central Citizens Bank parking lot location on Hope Street, or look at one online. There may be some spaces available at the Citizens Bank lot who wish to sell centrally, or who don’t have a suitable yard. Sign up here!
SNA was pleased to co-host a primary debate night along with the Mount Hope Neighborhood Association, Observatory Neighborhood Association, and the Providence Cultural Equity Initiative. We invited all candidates facing a primary for public office across the three neighborhoods, which included the open R.I. House District 4 seat, R.I. Senate District 6, and the Providence mayoral race. It was a hot and humid August night in the MLK Elementary cafeteria, but it was fantastic to see our diverse community and the candidates hoping to represent us coming together to talk about the future of Providence and Rhode Island.
