More than 40 residents attended an SNA-sponsored meeting on the future of the former Hillside Health Center between Chace and Hillside Avenues on August 10. The nursing home entered bankruptcy in 2003 and was forced to close its doors in June of 2004. Neighbors are concerned about how future use of the property will help or harm the neighborhood.
At the meeting, neighbors formed a new, SNA-affiliated working committee, chaired by John Smithers of Hillside Ave, to represent neighborhood interests in the re-development of the large complex. The new committee will monitor developments at Hillside, including current court cases and future regulatory proceedings, keep neighbors informed and aware and advocate for re-using the Hillside buildings in ways that are most appropriate to our residential neighborhood.

Regarding the future of Hillside Health Center:
An August 10th Hillside Center neighborhood meeting was organized by Karen Klingon and Howie Gladstone
44 Hillside neighbors met at Rochambeau branch library to discuss the future of Hillside Health Center
- The Center has been closed since June, 2004 and is currently under bankruptcy receivership with Allan Shine of Winograd, Shine, & Zacks P.C.
- Karen informed the attendees that an August 28th court date has been set to determine whether or not Suburban Mortgage will regain title to the property
- If Suburban retains ownership it would enable them to dispose of the property as early as this fall either by selling it or possibly by leasing it as a nursing home
- Should Suburban not regain title, the property will then be sold by the Receiver to the highest bidder
- Hillside is zoned for one, possibly two family residential, with the nursing home being an existing non-conforming use
- Almost any plan for development of Hillside would require a variance and hearing by the Zoning Board of Review
- In this event, there will be an opportunity for community input
- The single possible exception would be a strict return to its prior use as a nursing home/assisted living facility with no changes to the building, resident mix, or site configuration
During the August 10th meeting a smaller, working committee of ~10 was formed immediately after the meeting with John Smithers of Chace Avenue as Chair
- Howie Gladstone, also of Chace Avenue, will be the committee’s liaison to the SNA
- Members include Leslie Killgrove, Patrick King, Ellen Forte, Patty Tanalski, Janet Sullivan, Mike O’Cain, Dan Cahill, Jim Kelley and Karen Klingon
August 28th – Karen Klingon and Janet Sullivan attended the August 28 Superior Court hearing
- On 8/28 the Suburban hearing was postponed until September 8th.
- No reason was given in court, but no one else there seemed taken by surprise.
- Judge Silverstein’s courtroom is number 17
September 7th – The next meeting of the 10 Hillside Center Committee members was scheduled for Thursday, September 7th to decide how best to move forward> This meeting will require rescheduling following the Aug. 28 delay of the Suburban hearing date until September 8th
September 11 – Hillside will also be on the agenda at the next Board meeting of the SNA which will be held on September 11th at the Rochambeau branch library.
- A summary of the August 10th meeting will be presented along with new developments regarding the legal status of the property and the committee’s plans for addressing them
